Nineteen Virgin Islands track and field officials followed Esther Maynard around the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Friday afternoon taking notes and listening intently to every word she spoke.

“She is a guru,” former VI Olympian Guy Hill said.

The certified International Association of Athletics Federations trainer was here to teach officials about various track and field procedures during a 33-hour course.

The training is mandatory for the VI to host the CAC Age Group Championships in July. Nineteen of the 20 registered officials participated in the four-day event.

The seminar was conducted in a classroom and on the track. It focused on various areas including starting, finishing, measurements, faults and athlete techniques to name a few. Participants were given two IAAF manuals and took an oral and written exam.
