Two female tourists died while snorkelling last week in unrelated incidents in the area of The Baths on Virgin Gorda, police said Sunday.

On June 6, Diana Wright, 63, of Texas, was found unresponsive by family members while snorkelling in the area around 3 p.m., according to the Police Information Office.

Response

She was transported to shore, where personnel from the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic and Virgin Islands Search and Rescue attempted to resuscitate her.

They were unsuccessful, and she was later pronounced dead, police said.

Around noon on Friday, a woman from California was snorkelling at The Baths when she began experiencing difficulty, according to the PIO.

She was transported to shore, where attempts were made to restore her breathing, but she was later pronounced dead as well.

Police withheld the name of the second woman pending notification of her next of kin, they said.

The cause of death in both cases was still to be determined as of Sunday, according to the PIO.

Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
