A Virginia tourist was pronounced dead at Peebles Hospital Monday afternoon after experiencing apparent difficulties while in the water near Sandy Spit, police said.

The 65-year-old and his wife were diving with a local dive company, which police did not identify, around 10:30 a.m. when he alerted others in the group that he was experiencing difficulties, according to a police press release.

He was helped to the surface, but by then he was unresponsive.

Police are withholding his name until his family overseas has been notified.

The couple had been staying on Jost Van Dyke since Friday. Police continue their investigations into incident, the press release said.
