A 68-year-old man died while swimming at Loblolly Bay Beach on Anegada Sunday afternoon, police said.

Reports indicate that the deceased man and his wife, both from the United States, were visiting the island on a day sail. While swimming, the wife noticed her husband was lying motionless with his face in the water, according to a press release from the Police Information Office.

The woman sought assistance from others on the beach to get him to shore, where attempts were made to resuscitate him. He was then taken to the Anegada Clinic, where efforts to revive him continued; later, he was pronounced dead on Tortola, the release stated.

His name is being withheld at this point, police said.

The Coroner’s Office was informed of the death, and a post-mortem is to be scheduled. The Crisis Intervention Team, along with representatives from the BVI Tourist Board, provided assistance, according to the release.
