The international event included competitors from eight countries and top archers from Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“This competition was a very good experience full of fun and frustration,” said Winnette Lawrence, competing in the Compound Women’s Division. “I am not used to the weather conditions we shot in. There was wind, rain and slush from the mud caused by the rain. It was a bit tiring but overall it was a great experience shooting on the line with so many different people from so many countries. We are competing on the same field with Olympic athletes like, Sara Lopez of Columbia and Para Athlete Andre Shelby — the first black Olympic archer to ever win a gold medal. This was the first outdoor and international tournament of the year and we came here for training before the tournament.”

At the conclusion of the firstCaribbean Cup Archery Tournament the team returned home with 16 medals: seven golds, six silver and three bronze medals.

“We have made new friends, learned many things and overall had a wonderful time. This was a wonderful experience. To meet, shoot and learn from the more experienced archers,” said Ritseeniyah Georges.

The Virgin Islands Archery Association will host a fundraiser for the BVI Cancer Society on  June 10 at the Festival Village Grounds from 10a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Someone asked me last week, ‘why are you doing a fundraiser for the Cancer Society, dontt you guys need money to?,’’’ said VIAA Treasurer Mashauna Lake-Farrington. “I answered, ‘“Yes, we do need funding as we have a variety of projects on, but at  the same time it is also important to assist your community where there is a need and that is why we have chosen to have a fundraiser for the BVICS.”
