“Life was hell,” Mr. Fahie said.

Now a Community Mental Health Unit counselor and owner of his own counseling and therapy business — A Place Where Healing Begins — Mr. Fahie has been sober for 21 years.

On Dec. 21, he was announced as one of four proprietors to benefit from loans totaling $40,000 through the Kick Start BVI Small Business Loan Programme, said KSBVI representative Kim Takeuchi.

Mr. Fahie and other recipients were honoured during a Dec. 21 ceremony at VP Bank, which administers loan funds contributed by Virgin Group owner Sir Richard Branson and Google co-founder Larry Page.

“We had four really strong candidates, and there’s no restrictions on how many loans we offer per round,” Ms. Takeuchi said. “The beauty of this programme is that it’s open to all ideas.”

The other business owners who benefitted from this round of zero-interest-rate loans were Lenette Lewis of Sage Roots, Alex Dick-Read of Groundsea Adventures BVI, and Terri Benjamin of Chic Gourmet.
