The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States took another step toward closer integration on Friday with the inaugural session of the OECS Assembly in Antigua.

The body, which includes government and opposition representatives from OECS member states, is designed to act as a legislative filter, considering and recommending regional laws for the OECS Authority.

The sitting was held with much fanfare in Antigua’s Parliament Building after OECS Chairman Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, inspected a guard of honour.

Premier Dr. Orlando Smith and opposition member Alvin Christopher (R-D2) represented the VI. Their delegation also included Health and Social Development Minister Ronnie Skelton and Dolores Christopher (R-D5).

The Assembly includes five parliamentarians from each independent member state and three legislators from each non-independent member state.
