The Virgin Islands recently made a push into the cryptocurrency market at a major North American event, BVI Finance said.
The organisation stated that the territory used Canada Crypto Week this month to “solidify its reputation as a pioneering force in global financial services and digital innovation.”
As part of the trip, a VI delegation attended two major events — the Blockchain Futurist Conference and Consensus 2025 — and hosted a networking showcase, according to the agency.
“The energy, engagement and enthusiasm we experienced this week is a testament to the BVI’s growing influence in the fintech space,” BVI Finance CEO Elise Donovan said of the May 11-17 events. “As the world continues to evolve, the VI remains committed to building a future where trust, innovation and opportunity converge.”
The week began with the 2025 Blockchain Futurist Conference, where VI representatives met with industry leaders and explained the territory’s digital policies, legal frameworks and strategic positioning, according to BVI Finance.
Then came Consensus 2025, an event hosted by the cryptocurrency-focused media company CoinDesk. There, the VI delegation promoted the territory’s efforts to establish a fintech-friendly environment to a global audience, according to BVI Finance.
The agency also hosted a networking event at Kelly’s Landing in downtown Toronto themed “Discover Why the World Does Business in the British Virgin Islands — Destination Digital.”
More than 250 industry leaders, investors and digital experts attended, according to BVI Finance.
The VI delegation
The VI delegation was led by Ms. Donovan and two other BVI Finance officials: Director of Business Development and Marketing Rhodni Skelton and Senior Administrative Officer Trevaughn Smith, who also serves as the agency’s in-house fintech expert.
They were joined by about a dozen representatives from the territory’s private sector.
“Throughout Canada Crypto Week, BVI Finance delivered a consistent message: the British Virgin Islands is laying the foundation for a secure, innovative and forward-thinking digital financial ecosystem,” the agency stated. “With a world-class legal system, regulatory excellence, and commitment to digital innovation, the BVI is positioned as a leader in the next era.”
