Virgin Islands Rotarians’ fundraising efforts over the past two and a half years paid off this month for more than 500 Haitian children who will benefit from two newly built schools.

A delegation of VI Rotarians visited the schools, which officially opened this month, on June 13, according to a press release from the Rotary Club of Tortola.

The clubs’ efforts came after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the country on Jan. 12, 2010, reportedly leaving more than 300,000 Haitians dead and more than one million homeless.

The schools supported by the clubs’ efforts included the primary school in Simon, Les Cayes and the Good Samaritan School in Ill la Vache.
