The Virgin Islands competed in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s Junior Men’s tournament in St. Martin last weekend. The team consisted of Clyde Potter Jr., Paul Mourillon, Carlson Morton, Marlon Burke, Jordan Grant, Ricky Singh, Mickey Joseph, Tyler Jackson and Jahmaal Freeman.

The Virgin Islands defeated Anguilla, 3-0, to take fifth place at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s Junior Men’s tournament in St. Martin last weekend.

The tournament featured six teams from around the region, which included St. Maarten, Dominica, St. Lucia, Anguilla, the VI and St. Martin

St. Lucia was the overall winner, which finished the tournament undefeated.

In the VI’s first match, the team lost in three straight sets to St. Martin, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-10.

VI Coach Marlon Solomon said his team had a good start, but faltered due to inconsistent passing. Team captain Ricky Singh said the VI was nervous, but was looking forward to the next match. The top scorers for the VI were Carldon Morton, Paul Mourillon and Clyde Potter Jr.

On the following day, the VI faced Dominica.

The VI would drop its second match to Dominica in five sets, 8-26, 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, 9-15.

Mr. Solomon said his team improved and seemed to be more relaxed and passed better.

The top performers were Mr. Potter Jr. with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Mr. Mourillon had six kills and three aces, Mr. Morton finished with four kills and two digs, Mickey Joseph had three kills and five blocks, while Mr. Singh finished with three blocks and four aces.

The VI coach said he plans to develop the hitting component of his players.

In the team’s final match for fifth place, the VI beat Anguilla in three sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-29.

Mr. Potter Jr. led his team with 13 spikes, while Mr. Mourillon had nine spikes.

Jahmall Freeman had four blocks and Marlon Burke had 13 digs in the win.
