“Go wash your face in a sardine pan,” Leon and the Hot Shots sang Saturday on a stage erected in Spanish Town during the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.

The fungi band’s lyrics recounted life in the territory long ago, when many residents bathed outside in large basins.

Though a group of Ebenezer Thomas Primary School dancers may know nothing about washing in sardine pans, they danced happily to the song while they weaved ribbons around a plait pole.

Meanwhile, four food vendors dished out traditional Virgin Islands delicacies such as fungi and fish, conch coup, stewed whelks, rice and peas, and fried fish during the festival’s annual food fair.

“Letty, I want my conch,” Sandra Harrigan called out to Leticia Lennard, who stood behind a table full of food.
