Two Virgin Islanders have been included in the Queen’s 2018 New Year Honours List.

Lynden Smith, the long-time president of the BVI Reading Council, has been named a Member of the British Empire for her work advancing education programmes and literacy in the territory, according to the Governor’s Office.

Villa manager Monica Allen has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to the community.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made the appointments as part of her New Year Honours List, which recognises individuals for outstanding achievement and service across the United Kingdom and the overseas territories.

“My warmest congratulations go to both recipients on their well deserved awards for their longstanding dedication to education and contribution to the community,” Governor Gus Jaspert said.

VI citizens are eligible to be nominated for the Queen’s Birthday and New Year’s Honours. Nominations can be submitted to the Governor’s Office for consideration by the Honours Committee at any time of year.
