Although they convened Wednesday evening with the intention of electing an executive committee, members of the Virgin Islands Party voted to defer the election until next year.

The meeting itself was closed, but party president Carvin Malone explained afterward that a motion was made from the floor to defer the election, and that of the 58 delegates present for the vote, 46 supported it.

The delay will give party delegates more time to “address the many issues facing” the VIP, he said, adding that the 12-18-month period between now and the vote will give VIP members a chance to “stop, reflect, listen and assess the measures that would be required to take the Virgin Islands Party forward.”

For now, VIP executives remain the same, including Chairman Julian Fraser and himself as president, Mr. Malone said.
