Organisers had advertised an 8:30 a.m. start time, but shoppers were lining up well before that for the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue’s annual Market Day fundraiser Saturday morning.

As the caution tape around VISAR’s white elephant tent came down, crowds of people pushed in to get first choice of all the books, movies, shoes, clothes, water sports equipment and other items that had been donated by residents for sale that day.

The white elephant tent was the biggest at Market Day, but 40 individuals, families or businesses paid to rent smaller spots for the day. They sold plants, household items, clothing and entertainment equipment, among other things.

The event turns the Festival Village Grounds into a big flea market, with some residents discovering new-to-them treasures, and others getting rid their extra stuff.
