“What do you want?” Mitch Turnbull (R-D2) asked a participant at HireBVI’s Friday workshop on applying for employment.
She hesitated several seconds before tentatively replying, “To be a cook.”
“Why do you want to be a cook?” Mr. Turnbull pressed.
When several more seconds passed without a response, Mr. Turnbull turned to another participant and asked, “What do you want?”
If you can’t tell an employer clearly and decisively why you’re applying for their business, the chances of landing an offer are slim, the politician told the participants.
Mr. Turnbull primarily advised attendees about presenting themselves with confidence, but information packets were also distributed that included examples of an “acceptable” and “unacceptable” resume to present to prospective employers.
At the end of the workshop, the four attendees got a chance to submit mock resumes for feedback from HireBVI founder Rekeema Turnbull.
Ms. Turnbull, the human resource manager at CCT Global Communications, said she decided to start HireBVI in November 2015 after being inundated with resumes that needed work.
