Umbrellas, keys, office stationery, makeup, toys. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what might fit in a handbag.

On Monday, Denise Wintz walked into the Beacon office to pick up copies of a back issue. Before she sat down, she reached into her large red bag and pulled out a plastic bowl, which contained her lunch, to make room for the newspapers.

The bag also held an umbrella, hand creams and a small purse, among other items.

Like Ms. Wintz, many women in the Virgin Islands are carrying bigger and bigger bags, according to Tekeisha Drew, who recently launched a mobile boutique that sells women clothes and accessories.

“Women are going for bigger, prettier statement bags versus the simple and plain bags,” Ms. Drew said. “We want to put our junk in there — grab one bag and make sure everything fits into it.”

The style isn’t limited to this territory: Glamour Magazine recently included a “bucket bag” and a “stylish backpack” on its list of “10 spring handbag trends to try.”
