“Awhoo!” the Willard Wheatley Wolves howled after they were announced winners of the firstPrimary School Cheerleading Championship on Saturday at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

Then they jumped around and tossed their pom-poms in the air.

Besides the trophy for first place, the team took home $2,000 for their school and gold-coloured medals for winning the contest, which was organised by the BVI Cheerleading Committee.

The Joyce Samuel Stingers received the second-place trophy, $1,000 and silver-coloured medals, and the Alexandrina Maduro Eagles received the third-place trophy, $500 and bronze-coloured medals.

However, none of the eightparticipating primary schools walked away empty-handed, as all were presented with cheerleading pins.

During the show, the students used props like hoverboards and smoke machines as they performed flips, pyramid formations and other stunts.

In the stands, attendees whose t-shirts touted their favourite team cheered, applauded and waved batons.

Tickets were sold at $5 for children and $10 for adults, and the BVICC plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Inter-Primary School Track and Field Championship.
