After years of delays, works started last month on the Willard Wheatley Primary School’s new administration building, which is expected to be completed in the fall, according to Government Information Services.

When completed, the administration building will include the principal’s office, a staff room, a guidance counsellor’s office, a sick bay, a conference room, and storage and restroom facilities.

Taris and Associates Ltd is carrying out the project under a $495,524.91 contract, a GIS press release states. The project was designed by Devin George of DDG Studios, and the project manager is Steve Augustine of SA Architects.

Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said the new building will help students and staff.

In 2013, for example, government had allocated $500,000 for the new staffroom, with works slated to take place that year, Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn told residents at a community meeting in February 2013.

In 2009, WWPS had been allocated a smaller $400,000 improvement budget, which it was to share with three other schools. Asked about the apparently stalled project during a talk show in 2010, then-premier Ralph O’Neal said the WWPS repairs had been suspended because of problems securing funding.

Although the initial proposal for improvements at the Virgin Gorda basketball court only called for the court itself to be covered, the project has since been expanded to include a covered play area as well.
