On April 25-26, eight youth Virgin Islands sailors competed in the Cruzan Open Regatta hosted by the St Croix Yacht Club.

Four of the VI sailors (Rayne Duff, Nathan Haycraft, James Rajic-Knight and Maxwell Reshetiloff) competed in the Opti Championship Fleet.

Three sailors (Ryan Lettsome, Anya Reshetiloff and Nicolas Haycraft) competed in the Opti Green Fleet, while Thad Lettsome competed in the Laser Division.

The VI sailing team made the six-hour trip to St. Croix aboard a  donated Moorings catamaran.

On the first day of sailing,  competition was held inside the reef at Teague Bay with light, but shifty winds.

“The team responded very well and was able to quickly adapt to the conditions,” according to a Royal BVI Yacht Club press release.

Rayne Duff went on to win the Optimist Championship Fleet, who finished 21 points ahead of  the second-place finisher. He also won the Blue Fleet.

Nathan Haycraft won the White Fleet and finished sixth overall.

James Rajic-Knight finished 11th and Maxwell Reshetiloff finished close behind in 12th.

The Optimist Green Fleet was won by Ryan Lettsome who finished 23 points ahead of second place. Anya Reshetiloff finished in fourth place, while Nicolas Haycraft came in ninth out of 20 boats.

Thad Lettsome finished second in the Laser Division and even though he was sailing with a radial sail, he only finished two points behind the first-place finisher, who was using a Standard Full Rig, which is much larger than the Radial.

The next RBVIYC event is the BVI Dinghy Championships on May 16-17.
