Some Virgin Islands youths are asking residents to turn off their non-essential lighting and unplug appliances at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in celebration of “Earth Hour.”

The event, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature, is being observed here by the Caribbean Youth Environment Network’s VI chapter.

“We appeal to individuals, businesses and the entire community to join us in this voluntary act in conserving our present and future,” the CYEN said in a press release. “Let us go beyond the hour and become environmental stewards to aid in the preservation of our planet.”

Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses participated by turning off their lights for one hour to “take a stand against climate change,” according to the CYEN.

This year, more than 130 countries are planning to participate.
