It’s like a cross between surfing and kayaking.

It’s like going for a long bike ride, but on the water.

It’s way more of a workout that it looks.

Participants don’t necessarily agree on what it’s like to stand-up paddleboard, but at the first BVI SUP Cup Saturday in Brewers Bay, it seemed that all the participants agreed it was fun. That was no surprise to Andy Morrell, one of the event organisers.

“We expected it to go well. … It’s secretly very popular here,” Mr. Morrell said after giving away prizes for the day’s races. Seventy-two people participated in the elite, open, children’s or relay races, and many participated in more than one, largely on the strength, Mr. Morrell thinks, of the relaxed, family-oriented nature of the event.

“The thing about paddling is that it’s easy and it looks fun. You show up on a beach with some paddleboards and people will come over wanting to try it out,” Mr. Morrell said.
