Ralph O’Neal, the territory’s first premier, was admitted to Peebles Hospital on Friday night for observation after experiencing severe discomfort and nausea, according to a short statement released by his family on Tuesday.

Doctors determined that he had suffered a stroke, and that it would be in his best interest to be airlifted to the United States for specialist care.

“The medical and administrative staff of Peebles Hospital have displayed exemplary professionalism and care for which the family are most grateful,” the statement concluded. “The family thanks everyone for your visits and prayers and asks that everyone keep Hon. O’Neal in your prayers at this difficult time.”

Mr. O’Neal, 82, represented the Ninth District from 1975 until his retirement last year, and he spent 12 years as leader of the territory.

He became the Virgin Islands’ first premier after the position “chief minister” was phased out under the 2007 Constitution.
