Earl “Bob” Hodge and Roberto “Tico” Harrigan, both of whom were arrested on Feb. 7 on warrants issued by the United States Justice Department, were granted bail by Magistrate Shawn Innocent on Tuesday, according to defence attorney Patrick Thompson.

Their bail hearing, which was closed to the public, was held at the Road Town Police Station to provide extra security.

Mr. Hodge, who was granted $1 million bail, was required to have two sureties worth $400,000 each, and to put up $200,000 in cash, Mr. Thompson said.

Mr. Harrigan, who was granted $600,000 bail, was required to have two sureties worth $200,000 each, and to put up $200,000 in cash, according to the attorney.

Both men were also ordered to surrender their travel documents and to report in with the Road Town Police Station every day, he said.

The two defendants were arrested in 2011 on allegations that they helped arrange for cocaine to be flown from South America and dropped in Virgin Islands waters, where it was to be picked up by speedboats.

US officials sought the extradition of the pair, alleging that the US was the ultimate destination for the drugs.

However, Messrs. Harrigan and Hodge successfully fought two separate extradition orders via judicial review hearings in the High Court.

Mr. Hodge is represented by Mr. Thompson, Mr. Harrigan by defence attorney Stephen Daniels.
