Before March 1, Jevon Frett, a mechanic, was unemployed. His day was not structured, and he didn’t have a steady source of income.

His life has changed since then. He is now an apprentice with the Water and Sewerage Department, where he fixes vehicles.

On Friday morning at Maria’s by the Sea, Mr. Frett joined other apprentices who were previously among 490 unemployed young people who registered for the Youth Unemployment Register launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture in November.

After completing two weeks of workshops designed to prepare them for the workforce, 62 were called to work for the MCW as apprentices for three months.

“When I got the call, I felt like I won a million dollars,” Mr. Frett said. “It has been going good. Now I repair any vehicles the department needs repaired.”
