Residents in the North Sound, Virgin Gorda area have grown used to seeing their waters teeming with sailboats. But since 2011, this time of year has brought some of the world’s longest racing sailboats and most expensive motor yachts to Virgin Islands waters.

Twenty racing “superyachts” — each of which is over 100 feet long — and at least five additional motor yachts of comparable size are expected to attend the fourth annual Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous, which began yesterday.

The first regatta in 2011, which was hosted at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s then newly built facility in North Sound, saw participation from ten superyachts and 12 large motor yachts.

Now the regatta has grown so popular that organisers are considering holding separate events on different days to ensure that there is enough room to accommodate the vessels at YCCS’ 2,300 feet of dock space.
