Last year’s Black Boaters Summit was supposed to be the last. But because it was such a good time, organisers changed their minds.

Eighty-nine sailors toured the territory aboard 11 yachts last week as part of the 15th annual summit, which aims to introduce African-Americans to sailing.

“African-Americans, culturally, we don’t do water sports,” said Paul Mixon, an American travel agent who founded and coordinates the event. He added that many of the visitors he recruits are interested in a good island-hopping party, even if they don’t consider themselves to be serious sailors.

The group – which used catamarans from Voyage Yacht Charters and The Moorings – spent seven days sailing around Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, followed by two days in St. John and St. Thomas.
