Tortola Pier Park has been downsized from 17 buildings to 11. Documents obtained from the Town and Country Planning Department suggest that the six buildings that have not been constructed were estimated to cost more than $6 million.

But despite there being fewer buildings, total project costs have far exceeded original estimates: Communications and Works Minister Mark Vanterpool said last month that the total cost is about $24.6 million for 11 buildings, while original plans estimated that all 17 would cost about $18.6 million. Project officials have said that despite the reduction in buildings, the total square footage of the park has remained largely unchanged from original plans. Below are the six buildings that were subtracted from the original 17.

Counting the businesses

Officials have named 46 businesses that are expected to open locations at the Tortola Pier Park: Some were announced in October, others in a TPP pamphlet on Tuesday. At Tuesday’s grand opening ceremony, this reporter counted 26 that were open in some capacity. Others had “coming soon” signs on their doors and windows. Here’s a checklist of those businesses:

* Virgin Fleet and Island Optique were included in an October list of businesses scheduled to open at Tortola Pier Park, but they were not listed in the grand opening pamphlet from Tuesday, and this reporter did not find them there.
