New flights

Discount airline JetBlue Airways launched four new flights

last week to Latin America and the Caribbean, and it plans to launch two additional flights in December, the carrier announced. The new routes include flights to Nassau, Bahamas; La Romana, Dominican Republic; and Liberia, Costa Rica, all leaving from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. The carrier also launched daily service from San Juan, Puerto Rico to St. Maarten. In December JetBlue plans to add service between San Juan and St. Croix and St. Thomas, as well as a flight between Boston and St. Thomas, according to the firm.

Bank sustainability

A recently released survey of banks in Latin America and the Caribbean revealed that while most of the region’s banks have strong corporate governance standards, they could do more to improve their environmental and social sustainability. The Inter-American Development Bank survey of 55 banks in 19 countries found, for example, that while 98 of the banks it looked at had policies to combat money laundering, only 36 percent had measures in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The IAB commissioned the study in order to encourage sustainability among banks, the organisation stated in a press release.

Anguilla

Anguilla’s Sustainable Tourism Master Plan was approved for public release by the Caribbean Development Bank, which funded its creation. The plan, which was produced by the consultancy firm Halcrowe this year, estimates that a $277 million investment could double the size of Anguilla’s tourism industry over the next ten years, a consultant reported. The plan can be viewed online at http://www.gov.ai/stmp.php.
