Local pharmacists were recognised for their work in the health sector during the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists Convention, which was held in Barbados in August.

Gracia Wheatley, chief of drugs and pharmaceutical services in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, attended the meeting with Neil Hawke, pharmacy manager in the BVI Health Services Authority, Tricia Maxwell, a pharmacist at Qwomar Trading, and Medicure pharmacist Shabana Budhu, according to a press release.

Mr. Hawke won the “Pharmacy Practice Pioneer” award, which recognises pharmacists who have made a significant contribution to a health system’s pharmacy. Ms. Budhu won the Pedro Roberts Fair Play award for “demonstrating high ethical and humanitarian standards,” and Medicure Pharmacy won the Caribbean Pharmacy Sigma Award, the release said.

“It is an honour for my colleagues and a Virgin Islands’ pharmacy to have been selected from so many other regional and international pharmacists and pharmacies for these awards,” Ms. Wheatley said. “I am truly proud and congratulate them on this achievement.”

The convention is held annually and attended by regional and internationally based pharmacists, the release said.
