The fourth annual BVI Athletics Association awards gala was held on Dec. 28 at The Moorings Mariner Inn.

More than 100 awards were handed out at the event, which honours past and present track and field athletes.

This year’s guest speaker was Keita Cline, a two-time Olympian. As a junior athlete, Mr. Cline won six CARIFTA Games medals, a record for the territory.

Other past Olympians were also honoured and took part in the event by presenting awards to athletes. Besides Mr. Cline, they included Guy Hill, Dean Greenaway, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, Mr. Cline, Coralea Brown Cline, Willis Todman, Steve Augustine and Eric Matthias.

During the event Mr. Greenaway highlighted some of the BVIAA’s accomplishments during the last year, including hosting events and athletes’ performances. He also talked about new initiatives like club fees and the involvement of a psychologist and physiotherapist at competitions.

He encouraged younger athletes to get more involved in the association and learn about its history.

The last awards handed out were the Sol Athlete of the Year honours. Keon Penn was named Sol Youth Male; Kala Penn Sol Youth Female; Khari Herbert Sol Junior Male; Trevia Gumbs Sol Junior Female; and Karene King Sol Senior Female
