In the coming months 28 of the territory’s nearly 4,000 streetlights will be replaced with a more energy-efficient alternative: solar-powered light-emitting diode bulbs, BVI Electricity Corporation officials said Tuesday.

Several of the so-called LED lights have already been installed in Long Bush, Scatliffe Alley, Station Avenue and Waterfront Drive as part of the BVIEC’s campaign to preach energy conservation, Leroy Abraham, the company’s general manager, said at a press conference.

“Energy conservation is very important to all of us. It is the cleanest, cheapest, fastest and most sensible way to conserve electricity and essentially receive the benefits which all of us are looking for on our electricity bills,” Mr. Abraham said.

The new LED lights will be used as a pilot project, the general manager said.
