On Sunday, the BVI Football Association’s national football league got under way with two matches at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

The first game featured the Panthers and Sugar Boys.

In the 84th minute, after a series of passes at midfield, Derrol Redhead kicked the ball to Roger Roberts who scored the only goal of the game to give Virgin Gorda the win, 1-0.

During the first half, both teams missed several scoring opportunities. And defence also played a part in the low-scoring match, including saves from goal keeper Edgbert Isaac.

At the other end, Omar Williams was inches away from getting his head on a cross from Shamoy Thompson, who had a shot blocked by Leslie Ambrose in the Sugar Boys’ goal.

In the second game, the defending champions Islanders beat One Love, 2-1.

The opening goal was a header by Islanders midfielder Julian Davidson in the 29th minute. The lead was short lived when in the 43rd minute Howard Hemmings scored a goal.

In the second half, goal keeper Montgomery Butler had a save. But McTair James made it 2-1 in the 78th minute.

On Saturday, the Wolues will play Old Madrid at 5 p.m., while the Rebels take on Virgin Gorda United at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the Panthers will face One Love at 5 p.m. and then the Islanders will take on the Sugar Boys at 7 p.m.

All matches take place at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.
