After a severe case of altitude sickness and four gruelling days of hiking up the highest mountain in Africa, Guy-Paul Dubois was about ready to give up.

“Altitude sickness is like being struck by lightening,” he said in an interview last week. “It’s like a huge migraine. I wanted to vomit. I really thought I was going home.”

But despite the challenges, Mr. Dubois eventually made it to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, 5,895 metres above sea level. One thing helped motivate him to trek on: People were counting on him.

Mr. Dubois, who returned to the territory on Sept. 6, decided he wanted to climb Kilimanjaro for charity, and before leaving he built up a list of sponsors to raise money for the BVI Humane Society.

“I’ve raised about $4,800 so far, but it’s still going up. I’m hoping to hit $5k,” he said last Thursday.
