For the past several weeks, community football has been thriving at the Virgin Gorda Recreation Grounds.

Each Sunday, several games are played with teams ranging in age from under-9 to adults.

Currently, the league has four senior men’s teams competing. The league has four divisions: under-9, under-15, senior men and women.

The league is in its second round and all the teams have competed in three games each.

“The purpose of the league is that the community wants soccer back on Sundays — that is one of the main reasons we are doing it,” said Lorrelle Abrams, a VG Football League executive board member. “The kids love soccer as well.”

She added that the league has had a good turnout and games have been competitive.

In the Under-9 and Senior Men’s divisions, the White Speeders are the top teams.

However, there have been a few “little hiccups getting the games started,” Ms. Abrams said.

The league will host playoffs for each division. However, organisers are uncertain when the playoffs will start.

Last Sunday, the Blue Lions drew, 0-0, with the White Speeders.

The Red Coolers also finished in a tie with the Green Rangers, 2-2.

Sylvester Williams opened the scoring for the Coolers, before Terrance Nanton responded with a penalty shot to tie the game. Andres Bailey put the Rangers ahead moments later, but in the second half Roger Roberts scored a goal to end the game in a tie.

“As a community we see football as important,” Ms. Abrams said. “This league has been a great way to get people out and involved in soccer.”
