Police officer Neil Thomas was found guilty of common assault against his ex-girlfriend by Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo on Friday.

According to allegations heard in court, Mr. Thomas had a heated discussion with the victim about ending their relationship before kicking her in the midsection, sending her sprawling into nearby bushes.

Mr. Thomas took the stand during the trial, claiming that he was the one who was being attacked, and that he used his foot to try to defend himself and push away the assailant.

Ms. Baptiste-DaBreo is set to sentence Mr. Thomas on Friday.

He was placed on compulsory leave from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force in March.
