After a man reported on Sunday that two robbers stole his cellular phone and laptop at the CSY parking lot, police are urging bar patrons to be alert.

People leaving bars late at night are often easy targets for attack, according to a police press release.

Acting Police Commissioner said such attacks will likely increase during the August Emancipation Festival season.

“Crime trends and analysis suggest that robbers are targeting persons around entertainment venues,” he said, according to the release. “These individuals in some cases are using weapons to strip their victims of their valuables, including money, jewellery and cellular phones.”

The perpetrators are often looking for unattended cellular phones, purses and wallets, Mr. James added.

“They are also loitering in parking lots at popular entertainment sites and at ports of entry,” he said.

While police continue to patrol, he added, the public must do its part in protecting personal property by locking vehicle doors and securing valuables.

Entertainment venues and bars are encouraged to provide the necessary lighting and cameras outside their establishment to discourage loitering. In addition, notices advertising the existence of security devices should also be displayed, the release said.
