A murder suspect escaped from Her Majesty’s Prison on Saturday, but he was recaptured the same day, police said.

Police were notified by prison authorities around 4:05 p.m. that Jessroy McKelly had escaped from the Balsam Ghut facility during a recreation period on the compound, according to a police press release.

Officers of the East End Police Station, assisted by police detectives and an off-duty police officer, swiftly responded to search the area, the press release stated.

Mr. McKelly was subsequently recaptured in the Little Bay area around 4:25 p.m. A prison officer also assisted in the search.

The escapee is now in police custody, and investigations continue into the matter, the press release stated.

Mr. McKelly was arrested last year and charged with the 2008 murder of Kareem Sebastian, who died in May 2009 as a result of gunshot wounds sustained the year before.

Mr. Sebastian was shot multiple times outside a shed near the entrance to Crab Lot on Aug. 24, 2008, prosecutors said.
