Hats off to the three Caricom countries that no longer appeal court cases to the British Privy Council. Belize, Barbados and Guyana are now able to hang criminals if they choose.

A few months ago, I wrote about why the Caricom nations should have their own final court of appeal. Maybe those countries read my article? I am kidding. But I can’t understand why Jamaica and Trinidad, with the two highest murder rates in Caricom, don’t do the same.

As I have said, once you get independence, you should act that way. Keep Britain out of your court business. The Caricom nations’ murder rate is more than 10 times higher than the rates in the United States, Canada, Britain and Europe. So the Caricom countries should start hanging murderers, and others will think twice before killing people.

I just got back from the Bahamas, and I could not believe the taxi driver who told us they’ve been independent for a long time but Britain still has lots of say in the country. So I told him that is stupid.

In my Virgin Islands, 95 percent of the locals don’t want independence. Again, once you get your independence, you should not let any country tell you what to do. I am sad that I will never see my VI get independence in my lifetime.

I heard that Dominica is working to get its own court of appeal. Good luck. The remaining Caricom nations should join Belize, Barbados and Guyana and drop the Privy Council.
