One of the five men suspected of involvement in a string of dinghy thefts in late March has been arrested and charged with taking a conveyance without lawful authority, according to Police Information Officer Diane Drayton.

Jamal Freeman, 20, of the Greenland area, was arrested and granted $200 bail to appear in Magistrates’ Court on April 15, police said.

However, he failed to appear for his scheduled hearing and is now at large again, according to Ms. Drayton.

During the recent rash of thefts, police said, at least seven dinghies and a 17-foot Boston whaler were stolen.

Ms. Drayton said several of the dinghies have been recovered, but the Boston whaler is still missing.

Mr. Freeman is already serving an 18-month suspended sentence for stealing dinghies in July 2013 and later pleading guilty to two charges of taking a conveyance without authority.

The suspended sentence was the penalty for one of the charges, and for the other charge he was given a “stern warning” by Magistrate Dr. Velon John at the request of the Crown.

Ms. Drayton said anyone with information on the thefts can call the police Intelligence Unit at 468-9339 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline in Miami at 800-8477.
