A man accused of assaulting a woman at a bar in Paraquita Bay appeared at the Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

David Todman, 33, pleaded not guilty to common assault, and claimed that the incident was a misunderstanding.

Crown Counsel Herbert Potter, however, alleged that on Aug. 5, 2015, the defendant hit a woman in the face with his fist after she spilled a drink on his music speakers while he was deejaying at a Paraquita Bay bar.

The defendant continued to harass the virtual complainant until she left the bar and reported the incident to police, Mr. Potter said.

The Crown claimed that Mr. Todman later told officers that he had only slapped the woman because she threw a drink on him and hit his face after he refused to change the music.

He was later arrested and charged.

Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo granted $20,000 signed bail and ordered the defendant to avoid all contact with the complainant.

Mr. Todman was ordered to return for his trial on July 4.
