Tourists are no longer satisfied with lounging on the beach, Roliya Jackson said during the Junior Minister of Tourism Debate on Thursday at the Training Division.

“Tourists have evolved: no longer observing our culture from afar,” the Elmore Stoutt High School student said before recommending that the BVI Tourist Board create opportunities for visitors to learn about the territory’s culture and way of life.

Apparently, the judges were impressed: Ms. Jackson would later win the debate, earning the title of junior minister of tourism for the next 12 months.

During the contest, which lasted nearly an hour, Ms. Jackson competed again Johanna Gibson of Bregado Flax Educational Centre and Nia Douglas of Cedar International School.

The students each were allocated time to give recommendations on improving various aspects of the territory’s tourism product.
