One of the biggest challenges of being a farmer is that you never get a day off, said Aaron Hill, who was named Farmer of the Year at the Friday morning kickoff of Farmers’ Week in Paraquita Bay.

“There’s always something that needs to be done,” Mr. Hill said shortly after receiving his trophy.

This year was his fourth entering the agriculture competition with his business partner MacHenry George.

On their 1.5-acre Harrigan Estate farm, the pair grow a wide range of produce — including pineapple, ginger, cabbage, sugarcane and sweet potatoes — which they sell directly to customers. Recently the farm has had enough work that they’ve had to hire temporary workers from time to time, Mr. Hill said.

Though it might not be easy, the pair said they continue farming because they enjoy it.

“It’s hard, but you keep doing it because you love it,” Mr. George said.

Produce from Messrs. Hill and George and other farmers will be on sale throughout the weekend as the farmers’ exhibition continues at Paraquita Bay. Exhibitions are also scheduled for sister islands throughout the week.
