About 50 people turned up to sign up for 13 subcommittees of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee at a general meeting last Thursday.

Many of the committees have returning members, but the body welcomes fresh perspectives, and is still encouraging more residents to join, said Marvin Blyden, VIFF chairman.

The committee will also be giving away two cars as prizes during the August Emancipation Festival season: one for the winner of the Miss BVI Pageant and one for the winner of the Calypso Showcase, according to a statement from the committee.

Mr. Blyden had recently met with two possible entertainment promoters, he told attendees at the meeting, but a decision had not yet been made regarding who would be contracted for the job, which includes finding artists to perform at the festival village.

The chairman was responding to a question from meeting attendees. He said the entertainment will be handled by a promoter as in recent years, and added that he welcomes proposals from entertainment promoters.

“Years ago, we used to do it ourselves,” Mr. Blyden said, adding that the committee has not ruled out returning to that system for future festivals.
