For the 168 people who took advantage of Scotiabank’s annual free HIV/AIDS testing on Friday, their status is no longer a mystery.

Though organisers fell short of their goal of testing 200 people, participation in the annual event is steadily increasing, according to Shanica Robin, a Scotiabank representative for the bank’s Bright Future programme.

When the free tests were first carried out in 2009, 127 people were tested: 49 on Virgin Gorda and 78 on Tortola. This year, the tests also included Anegada.

Next year, organisers hope to get faith-based organisations such as churches to assist in increasing participation, according to Ms. Robin.

“It is not just about getting tested, but we are trying to stop discrimination, and promoting love, respect and protect,” she said. “Know your status.”
