Eight youths were honoured with Emerging Fellow Awards during a ceremony Monday morning at Maria’s by the Sea.

Among them were musicians, dancers, actors and athletes who will receive part of the $50,000 that government has pledged to send them to educational programmes to hone their skills.

“It is always good when you can reach out and respond to the opportunities for development and not let them pass you by,” Premier Dr. Orlando Smith told the recipients. “In some ways, you are responsible for helping yourselves to grow. We can provide the avenues where we can and when we can, and it is you who must take the next step and show interest in your own development.”

 

Application forms for the fellowship were made available in November, and a committee charged with the selection process visited schools to inform students of the awards, said Arthur Sellwood, who chaired the committee.
