Decades ago, the Greenland Field was filled with thorns, Naaman Chalwell said Wednesday during a ground-breaking ceremony for a new multi-purpose stadium there.

Mr. Chalwell and about 100 other residents gathered in the shade of a tent to watch as government officials broke ground for the facility.

The project will be funded mostly by FIFA, which will also oversee its construction, said Angenie Kanhai, development officer with the international football organisation.

The project, which doesn’t have a scheduled start or end date yet, will be carried out in stages, according to the FIFA official.

Ms. Kanhai wouldn’t speculate on the exact sum the organisation is committing to the project.

“It depends on what they request, but we should be funding what we believe should be most of it,” she said.
