It was early Sunday evening, and Gregory Smith was kicked back under the shade of his booth while a cook blackened corncobs on a sizzling barbecue at Farmers’ Fair Day Weekend.

Around him, kids bounced in inflatable castles, a band played up-tempo tunes on a central stage, and fellow farmers and vendors hawked everything from fresh produce to natural remedies and eclectic jewellery.

“We made a promise between ourselves to continue to have some event at least once a year,” said Mr. Smith, who farms corn and a variety of other produce.

The festival, which he described as “excellent,” came on the heels of a Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour press release announcing another long-term delay of the government-backed Farmers’ Week.

However, planning for the second annual Farmers’ Fair Day Weekend actually began last year, long before the MNRL announcement, according to James Lettsome III, the event’s coordinator.

The festivities lasted all day Saturday and Sunday and seemed to be well appreciated by the farmers in attendance at the Festival Village Grounds.

“The farmers were very happy,” Mr. Lettsome, a baker, said on Monday, adding, “They are grateful to those who came out.”
