More than 180 persons competed last Saturday’s season opener of the 17th H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Highland Spring Race Series got on its way.

In similar fashion to the start of the 2011 series, defending overall male champion Khiry Creque was first to cross the line in a time of 12 minutes and 22.28 seconds, positioning himself towards the possibility of a second consecutive overall male title. Not far behind were Shaquoy Stevens and Teymahl Huggins.

For the females the under-17 division runners, Lakeisha Warner and Tarika Moses took the top two spots, respectively, both running under 14 minutes. Niayla Smith captured the third place spot for the overall female while M’Khori Crabbe and Vallesha Guishard set the pace for the one mile boys and girls races.

The Cross Country Team categories have already began to heat up as the Rotaract Club led by Alston Hanley outran team Rotary Club of Tortola by one point for the first place spot in the first race.  Similarly Cedar Primary Team-1 has taken the lead over teams Willard Wheatley and Althea Scatliffe.  Team HLSCC with a full slate led the Community Partners division while Cedar Secondary was the lone secondary team in the first race.

A  highlight of the day included the debut competitive ride of Joel Jean-Baptiste, who is unable to walk upright and relies on a walker or wheelchair, is currently being coached by Chris Ghiorse for wheelchair road and track events.  Mr. Jean-Baptiste is supported by the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town and BVI Special Olympics.

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn said “she was more than happy to allow Joel to compete and develop his budding skills. The necessary precautions were taken to ensure everyone’s safety on the course and the organizers of the event are looking forward to his progress in the races to come.”

Ms. Russ Penn summed up the day’s event indicating that “overall it was another great start of a well anticipated and awesome community event.”

The Virgin Gorda leg of the series kicks off Saturday at 6:30 a.m. at the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre.
