H. Lavity Stoutt Community College honour students were recognised recently for their work restoring mangroves in the territory.

The college’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society received two of 60 awards given for “Honors in Action Projects” during an international convention held from April 4-6 in San Jose, California, according to a press release from HLSCC.

The Virgin Islands students’ submission was one of 2,990, the press release states.

The chapter’s advisor, Debra Hodge, also received one of 30 “Distinguished Advisor” awards at the convention, which organisers said was attended by 3,600 people.

The VI students’ work included locating a flood-prone area and working with the National Parks Trust to restore mangroves there, according to the college.

Phi Theta Kappa serves students in more than 1,275 community colleges around the world.
