Her Majesty’s Prison inmate Shakoy Lavacia has been charged with attacking a fellow prisoner — for the second time.
On Saturday, the 22-year-old was arrested at 12:45 p.m. and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm, according to Police Information Officer Diane Drayton.
But this was not the first time Mr. Lavacia, who is serving time for the possession of an illegal firearm, has been charged with a violent crime while at the correctional facility.
In May, he was charged with the attempted murder of another inmate in relation to a stabbing on April 1, according to police.
The male victim was taken to Peebles Hospital for treatment, police stated at the time. He was subsequently discharged and returned to the prison.
Other violence
HMP has been plagued with reports of violence in recent months, especially in July and August.
Two weeks ago, three inmates attacked two officers at the facility, according to reports from multiple online news outlets. Ms. Drayton did not confirm or deny the details reported online, but she said the Criminal Investigations Department is still probing the incident.
And on July 29, a male inmate was stabbed on the prison compound. He was taken to Peebles for his injuries and later released.
Attempts to reach HMP Superintendent David Foot were not successful.
